Govt urged to address water crisis in Laii village

Imphal, February 08 2025: Senapati ADC former vice-chairman LK Kasaso has drawn the attention of the government to address the severe water scarcity in Laii village, which, he claimed, is the most affected area in the district.

In a press release, LK Kasaso recounted that the government had initiated the Laii Water Supply Scheme in two locations.

One scheme, established in 1976, sourced water from 15 kilometres away, while another, set up in 2017, drew from 10 kilometres.

However, neither location has provided adequate water supply.

During the Christmas (2024) and New Year (2025) periods, villagers clashed over access to safe drinking water.

He said that Laii village consists of three main clans, each led by their own chairman.

They collectively issued orders limiting water access which allows small households only two buckets a day, while larger households can take four.

As a result, villagers struggle to obtain safe drinking water, often having to trek to a distant river for cleaning and washing, he related.

The ex-vice chairman further highlighted' that Laii village, located about 143 km from Imphal, near the Nagaland border, has one government school and one primary health centre (PHC), though there are many private high schools and primary schools.

He also pointed out that the construction of the Tadubi- Ukhrul two-lane road has adversely affected the water source and pipeline of the 1976 Laii Water Supply Scheme.

He urged the relevant authorities and government departments to take prompt necessary action to alleviate the suffering of the villagers.
