Mongbung villagers return, security beefed up

After nearly two months' stay in the relief camp opened at Chingdong Leikai Upper Primary school near Jiribam town, residents of Mongbung Meetei village displaced due to ethnic violence returned to their respective homes on Tuesday.
The development comes after thorough discussions among officials of Jiribam district administration, district police, 39 Assam Rifles and 87 Bn CRPF on the advice of chief minister N Biren Singh and subsequent deployment of additional deployment of CRPF and state forces in and around Mongbung village.
A total of 133 villagers including 48 children of 48 families were escorted till their respective homes on Tuesday by Jiribam DC and SP accompanied by COs of 39 Assam Rifles and 87 Bn CRPF with additional personnel.
Notably, Mongbung Meetei village is close to Mongbung Kuki village and Seijang Kuki village.
When violence broke out in the district, entire residents fled and took shelter at Chingdong Leikai school relief camp.
Some of the villagers returned to their homes with subsidence of violence but returned to relief camp after their village was attacked with bombs from the side of Mongbung Kuki and Seijang Kuki villages on July 9 night.
One CRPF trooper also got killed and two state force personnel suffered injuries when a security team was ambushed from Mongbung Kuki and Seijang Kuki villages on July 14.Apart from these incidents, many dwelling and farm houses belonging to Meetei community nearby Mongbung and Seijang villages have been torched.
