Imphal, November 05 2024:
Suspected Kuki militants opened fire toward Thamnapokpi Mayai Leikai, a Meetei village under Yaingangpokpi police station, in the early hours of Tuesday.
The attack resulted in two bullets hitting the house of one Ngangom Tampak (72) .
However, no injuries were reported.
One Lairenlakpam Pramo shared the community's ongoing distress, revealing that such attacks have become a regular occurrence.
"The villagers haven't had a peaceful night's sleep in the last 16 months," she stated, adding that many villagers are forced to keep night vigil to ensure their safety.
Despite authorities advising residents to limit agricultural activities between 10 am and 3 pm, the same does not make any sense, Pramo said, questioning the practicality of working in the fields after staying Up all night on guard.
The government had previously promised deployment of security forces and a crackdown on militant activities in the area.
However, no tangible actions have been initiated by the authorities, contended Pramo, asking if authorities were waiting for a tragic outcome to prompt them.
She lamented that during Tuesday's unprovoked attack, security forces did not returned fire, leaving the community feeling abandoned and vulnerable.
The residents of Thamnapokpi appealed for immediate and effective security measures to protect them from further attacks and ensure their safety.
