RS MP proposes cultural heritage site tag to Ima Keithel

Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba on Monday appealed to the Union government during the zero hour in Rajya Sabha for declaring Ima Keithel, also known as Khwairamband Ima Keithel, as a living cultural heritage site.
Ima Keithel, located in the heart of Imphal city, is one of the oldest women's markets in Asia and holds significant historical and cultural importance, he said along with informing that only women are allowed to operate the market The market, whose name translates to "Mother's Market" (Ima meaning mother and Keithel meaning market), is not just a commercial hub but also socio-economic space in the history of Manipur, he said, highlighting the market's deep roots in Manipuri culture, including its mythological backstory and role in the two historic women's uprisings in Manipur, known as the Nupi Lal of 1904 and 1939, led by women of the said market against British rule.
He described the market as a powerful symbol of women's economic empowerment and an excellent example of Nari Shakti (women s power) .
Given its historical significance, cultural value, and its embodiment of women's empowerment, Sanajaoba, who is also the titular king of Manipur, urged the Union government to declare the Ima Keithel as a living cultural heritage site under Article 51A of the Indian Constitution.
He also called for its preservation as a place of historic interest and national importance under Article 49 of the Constitution.
