Angry students block road, burn effigies of Education Minister, Director

Imphal, September 04 2014: Decrying the failure of Education Department to appoint required teachers and avail needful infrastructure in their school, the angry students of Ananda Singh Higher Secondary Academy located at Nongmeibung today blocked Nongmeibung-Porompat road and burnt effigies of Education Minister M Okendro and Director of Education Department.

On hearing the news, a team of Imphal East Police rushed in and tried to bring the situation under control.

After a while, the Joint Director of Education Department also arrived and held talks with principal and students' union of the school.

While the talk was going inside the school, a convoy of Superintendent of Police, Imphal East came and told the students to immediately end the road-block which they objected.

But the agitated students were somehow forced to step back inside the school campus.

Suddenly, some amongst the infuriated students pelted stone towards police.

In retaliation, police blank-fired two rounds of shot and also fired tear gas shells in which 15 students fainted.

The students were admitted to JNIMS Hospital and discharged later.

Earlier, the Joint Director of Education Department during the meeting with principal and students' union of the school assured that the demands of the students including appointment of required teachers and construction of the school toilets will be met within September 6 .
