Poppy destruction operation continues

As a part of the government's war on drugs campaign, Chandel police, reserved line Chandel, 8th Manipur Rifles and functionaries of Japhou Bazar Authority jointly destroyed 8 acres of poppy plants found cultivated in Old Lamkang Khunthak village area on Wednesday.
The destruction of poppy cultivation started around 11 am and was led by Chandel police station OC Romendro.
The joint team successfully destroyed the illegal poppy cultivation by burning it completely.
Senapati district police led by the SDPO also destroyed around 5 acres of poppy plantation at Ngatan village on Tuesday.
The team backed by 50 police personnel, both armed and unarmed, was accompanied by Senapati SDC/executive magistrate Ch Neli.
According to the police, during the survey on January 27 around 15 acres of poppy fields were identified.
However, police found around 10 acres being destroyed while around 5 acres of poppies were found standing which were destroyed during the drive on Tuesday.
The approximate value of the destroyed poppies is around Rs 35,00,000 .
The total area of poppies cultivated by Ngatan village this year is around 30 acres.
However, 25 acres of poppy fields were destroyed by the owner and villagers.
The remaining 5 acres of standing poppy crops which were destroyed by the Senapati district police belonged to one Rockson (44), s/o Ng Pungdeng of Ngatan village (Taklung village) .
A suo moto case has been registered for investigation, the police further informed.
Meanwhile, a joint team of Tengnoupal district police, NAB and Tengnoupal forest division led by ASP (Ops) Y Premjit and Machi PS OC S Ibotombi continued the op eration of destroying illegal poppy plantations in about 35 acres in SL Zougam village area in Tengnoupal district on Tuesday while Kangpokpi district police along with forest department officials destroyed poppy plants in about 12 acres of land in Kangchup Reserved Forest area.
Tengnoupal district police along with forest department and NAB also destroyed poppy plants in 24 acres of land in Khudei Khullen village.
Tousem police along with forest department as well as members of Kuki Students' Organisation, Kaimai Kuki Women's Wings, Kamai Kuki Village Authority also destroyed poppy plants in about 7 acres in Kaimai hill range.
