Imphal, August 31 2016:
On account of continuous removal of earth, Ushoipokpi hills located near Waithou junction of Imphal-Moreh road are fast vanishing.
They no longer appear to be hills.
With the hills getting flatter and lower, many new houses are being constructed.
Notably, the hills were declared as protected forest area under the Forest Conservation Act 1966.But many people have been continuously extracting earth as if there is no rule of law.
There is a record which says that the area where the hills now stand was registered in the name of an individual in 1960.But it was not clear whether due approval of the Forest Department was obtained before the patta was issued, informed a source.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forest PN Prasad maintained that extraction of earths from Ushoipokpi hills was illegal as the hills were already declared as a protected forest area under the Indian Forest Act.
PN Prasad further asserted that no approval was obtained from Forest Department when the Government issued patta of Ushoipokpi hills to an individual.
