Imphal, March 30 2019:
The Transporters' and Drivers' Council (TDC) has threatened that drivers of all vehicles requisitioned for election duty would launch cease work strike from April 8 in case Agriculture Department fails to release the transportation charge of Rs 82,44,670 indebted to the department for transporting fertilizers from Jiribam railhead to Imphal.
Speaking to media persons today, TDC president H Ranjit said that the Manipur Truck Owners' Welfare Association transported 44,426 bags of fertilizers from Jiribam to Imphal at the advice of the Chief Minister in 2018 when farmers in the State faced acute shortage of fertilizers as Agriculture Department failed abjectly in procuring necessary fertilizers.
The fertilizers were transported in 142 trucks and their transportation charge was Rs 82,44,670 .
The transportation charge must be paid by Agriculture Department but the amount has not been released yet, Ranjit said.
He also expressed strong displeasure against the concerned Minister and officials for allegedly giving no attention to the matter in spite of repeated appeals and reminders.
If the transportation charge is not paid by April 7, drivers of all vehicles requisitioned for election duty would launch cease work strike from the next day but this does not mean TDC would boycott the election, Ranjit said.
He further informed that certain quantity of timber and wooden planks necessary for installation of wheel guards on Barak Bridge have been purchased and handed over to NHIDCL and due installation work would begin soon.
