Imphal, September 26 2023:
The Zeliangrong Union Committee Manipur (ZUCM) has refuted the claim that Constable Prem Kamei alias Apuna Kamei shot himself and got killed while cleaning his gun at Nongpok Sanjenbam police outpost in Imphal East yesterday.
The Kabui Union, Manipur (KUM) has claimed that Apuna Kamei was murdered and condemned the incident in the strongest terms.
The Union said that they are prepared to register strong protests if the Government fails to take necessary actions against the 'killer', provide adequate compensation and a Government job to the next of kin of the deceased.
Speaking to the media at Namdunlong today, ZUCM Imphal Valley president Maibon Phaomei claimed that Apuna Kamei was murdered after returning from duty at the police outpost yesterday.
Saying that deceased personnel worked under Sub Inspector Yumnam Nongalakpa Mangang, he claimed that Apuna Kamei might have been killed by the personnel of the same outpost while preparing for lunch after returning from duty.
Maibon claimed that they also have evidence of the 'murder' .
Notably, Apuna Kamei was a personnel of 6th IRB attached to Imphal East commando.
He is survived by his wife and three children.
The claim that the Constable got killed while cleaning his gun is unfounded and baseless, he added and claimed that the gun issued to the deceased was AK-47 but the bullet which hit him was of 9-mm.Further claiming that SI Nongalakpa was involved in the killing and he (the police officer) is in police custody, Maibon cautioned that the killing of the Constable may create tension between the communities amid the ongoing crisis in Manipur.
Maibon also claimed that the Constable died at around 1 pm but his family was informed of the incident over an hour later at around 2.30 pm.
The authorities didn't allow the family members to even visit the site of the incident or see the mortal remains, he claimed.
Alleging that SI Nongalakpa has admitted the charges levelled against him, he urged the Government to terminate the police officer and sentence him to capital punishment.
Since Apuna got killed on duty, full wages must be given to the bereaved family for his service and also provide a Government job to the next of his kin , he demanded.
Maibon said that the mortal remains will not be claimed until there is some sort of agreement with the Government.
