Kabui Union remembers Haipu Jadonang

Kabui Union, Manipur has asked the people of Manipur to lit a candle on August 29, the death anniversary of Haipu Jadonang, who was hanged to death on August 29, 1931 .
A press release signed by the president of the union, Dr K Heera Kabui said that Jadonang was a remarkable leader of the State who built an army of oppressed people to take on the oppressor, the British, during the early decades of the 20th century.
His contribution in movements that protested the British authority for collecting house tax from the hill dwellers and at the same time forcing them, the people of the hills, to labour are worth remembering, Dr K Heera stated.
However, he was arrested by the British on February 19, 1931 and sentenced to death for 'waging war against them, Dr Heera continued.
Claiming that the effect of the infamous 'divide and rule' policy of the British can be felt in the State even today, he added that Kabui Union, Manipur will continue to focus on strengthening the relationships of various communities residing in the State.
He also appealed to all to lit a candle in the evening of August 29 as a token of respect to the late leader.
Jadonang was born on June 10, 1905 at Puiluan village of the present-day Nungba Sub-Division in Tamenglong district.
