Affirming that cleaning of river beds of major rivers in Manipur will begin soon during this lean season, Water Resources Dept Minister Letpao Haokip today affirmed that there are channels through which required funds for the initiative and restoration work of river banks can be utilized.
He informed this to reporters while speaking on the sideline of inspecting the flood prone area in Kshetrigao AC along with the local MLA Nahakpam Indrajit and officials of Water Resources Department.
The Minister informed that there is consideration for taking aid from NABARD apart from utilizing fund from the existing Relief and Disaster Management for the initiatives and added that the sub-allocation of it is yet to be done.
He also said that there is also Rs 7 crore in hand and conveyed that he will also pursue the Centre to get more aid for the works to be undertaken.
Admitting that there are many vulnerable and sunken areas along the river banks of Imphal River, Iril River, Kongba River and Nambul River, Letpao asserted that efforts are on to construct/reinforce retaining walls along these areas.
Commenting that the retaining walls constructed in the past along the river banks in valley areas lack quality maintenance, the Minister said soil testing, density analysis and other necessary things will be done before making bored pile along the river banks apart from maintaining necessary depth at the time of bore piling.
Strict orders had been given to all the engineers and officials of the concerned department to ensure quality maintenance .
