Imphal, September 25 2012: In an effort to promote its indigenous basket-making culture among Maring community in the state, Sandang Senba Maring village, Senapati District conducted a bamboo basket making competition on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, M L Dominic Konsuwa, SDC of Sandang Senba Maring said that the Maring community is known for making basket and it is unique from the baskets made by other communities in the state.

Stating that the competition is to promote the indigenous basket-making culture of the Marings, the SDC pointed out that unlike other business enterprises, basket making is not an expensive one.

Apart from that, the required raw materials, Bamboo and Cane, are grown and available abundantly in the state.

If a person takes up basket making as a profession, he or she can generate income to the family.

A total 14 competitors participated in the event.

The prizes of the competition would be distributed during the youth cultural meet of the village on October 14 .
