Non-local man shot dead

Imphal, July 25 2013: An unidentified assailant shot dead a non-local man in Mayang Langjing area in Imphal West district under Lamshang Police Station on Thursday.

Locals of the area said he was a scrap metal collector and identified him as one Md Kalam from West Bengal.

He was in his 30s.Residents of the area knew him since a couple of months as he used to come there often for collecting metal scraps.

The locals were not sure about his exact temporary address, but said they heard that he was staying in Uripok in the district.

However, police said that as per the voter ID recovered from his body, his name was written as Sajahan SK, 38, son of Sakeel SK, a native of Jiddi Padda in Murshidabad in Uttar Pradesh.

Eye-witnesses said at around 4 pm, an unidentified person who was travelling on a Kinetic scooter shot him near a water reservoir located between Mayang Langjing and Phumlou.

He died at the spot.

The assailant fled the scene after the attack.

One bullet hit in his neck, according to police.

They said one empty case recovered from the site which was believed to be a 9 mm pistol projectile.

Lamshang Sub-Divisional Police Officer rushed to the site and conducted a spot verification.

The body has been deposited at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) mortuary.

The Lamshang Police has also registered a case in connection with the incident.
