JNU organises 3-day conference on NE

Imphal, March 25 2015:
A 3-day conference on "Framing a Region: New Perspectives on North East India" began on Wednesday at the Conference Hall, JNIAS, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi.
The conference has been organised by the university's Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Advanced Study (JNIAS) and North East India Studies Programme (NEISP) and will continue till March 27 .
On the inaugural day, the first session titled Culture and Knowledge was chaired by Dr Bhagat Oinam, Centre for Philosophy, JNU.
The session included Manindra Nath Thakur, Centre for Political Studies who spoke on 'Tantra' as a Knowledge System: A Philosophical Journey to 'Mayong'and Urmilla Sarkar of School of Arts and Aesthetics who presented a paper on "Strategizing Projections of Cultural Identity: Case studies from the North-Eastern States" .
In the afternoon session titled Practices of State, a paper "A Geographical Imagination of North-East (of India)" was presented by Kekhrie Yhome of The Kohima Institute, Kohima while Th Sanjeev of The National Archive of India, New Delhi talked on "Surveying and Producing the Frontier in Nineteenth Century Manipur: Practices and Challenges" .
The third session included paper presen-tations by Amena Passah, Department of History, NEHU, Shillong on "Health Care in Meghalaya: Shifting Perspectives" while Nandita Saikia, Centre for Study of Regional Development, School of Social Sciences, JNU gave a presentation on "Mortality trends in Assam 1970-2010: A Comparison with the Bigger States" by Nandita Saikia, Centre for Study of Regional Development, School of Social Sciences, JNU.
The fourth session titled "Locating Region", a paper titled "Relocating North-east India in Trans-regional Space: Development � Security Argument" by Rakhee Bhattacharya, Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Contemporary Studies, New Delhi while Shashwati Goswami, Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi gave a presentation on "Media and the Idea of North East" .
