The 10th State Assembly Election which is to be held early next year is likely to be held district wise, for the first time, on security reasons and also to prevent unwanted incidents from happening.
According to a highly reliable source the state government, considering the present law and order situation of the state, has taken up stringent measures so that the coming 10 State Assembly Elections are held in a free and fair manner.
The source further revealed that for the coming State Assembly election to be held early next year, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has also decided to conduct the election in two phases.
Although there has been discussions to conduct the election in two phases, the state government, looking at the number of security personnel needed, the problems of transportation during the election and considering the present chaotic situation of the state, has decided to urge the ECI to conduct the election district by district so that unwanted happenings could be controlled and elections could be held in a free and fair manner.
It can be rightly pointed out at this point of time the prevailing law and order situation of the state and the various problems faced by the people as such.
The SHDDC has been continuing its economic blockade in demand of a full fledged district of Sadar Hills.
On the other hand the UNC has insisted that no Naga inhabited area can be brought under the proposed Sadar hills district and is also imposing a counter economic blockade.
Meanwhile, the UNC along with ANSAM has been demanding for an alternative arrangement for the Nagas and is agitating at the moment with total bandh in all the Naga inhabited areas.
Though the agitation for the demand of a separate district of Jiribam has subsided for the moment, the state administration has apprehensions that it might creep up any moment.
Above all, with the election nearing, situation in Imphal is also tense.
It might also aggravate further with various inspiring candidates trying their best to woo the electors, with the election knocking at the door.
The state government is also apprehensive as to whether the Union government would agree to its demand for providing 466 company of paramilitary forces for the coming election, since elections will be held in 5 states at the same time.
Considering all these problems the state government has decided to conduct the election district wise, the source further said.
