CBTUM, UCM flays abduction

Imphal, April 23 2013:
Co-ordinating Body of Trading of Trade Unions (CBTUM), Manipur, a joint body for trade unions' in Manipur and United Committee Manipur (UCM) have condemned the abduction of oil-tanker MN 02- 6268 driver Surjit of Sangakpam by some identified people from the tight security area of Kohima City Reserve Line, Nagaland on 21st April.
Kidnapping of driver just after few days of killing truck driver S Babu by suspected NSCN-IM cadres along the National Highway-37 has been made possible due to non-establishment of highway protection forces, a long-standing demand of various sections of the society especially by motor workers and owners.
More than 2000 incidents of murder, kidnapping, robbery, attacks on drivers and their vehicles had been occurred along the National Highways in Manipur.
So, it's high time for both State and Central government to implement the demands of the trade union as well as drivers and owners of goods carrier vehicles, Khetrimayum Shanta, Convenor of CBTUM said in a statement.
In a separate statement signed by its Nd Luwang, Secretary IPR, UCM also appealed for safe release of the abducted driver.
UCM has also warned against closing of oil pumps by taking advantage of the cease work strike by oil tanker drivers.
