Handicraft sector bosting state's economy: Sanjib Kumar

Ministry of Textiles' Handicraft Service Centre (HSC), Imphal, senior assistant director Mutum Sanjeev Kumar has stated that handicraft sector has been making substantial contributions in boosting the state's economy.
Speaking at the inaugural function of the weeklong 'Gandhi Shilp Bazar (District)' organised by M/s Kshetri Thiyam Leikai Weavers Cooperative Society Limited, Kongba under the sponsorship of Ministry of Textiles' Development Commissioner (Handicraft) at Imphal Urban Haat, Nilakuthi on Saturday, M Sanjeev highlighted that after the agriculture, the handicraft sector generates largest number of employment, subsequently aiding in sustaining the development of the state.

Mentioning that there are 10 HSCs under Ministry of Textiles in the northeast region with Assam having maximum of four centres, he said Manipur is also making notable progress in the handicraft sector compared to the other NE states.
Sanjeev also informed that 75,000 artisans have been enrolled in the HSC, Imphal, so far out of the target set to enrolment of 3 lakh artisans.
He then appealed to the artisans to avail benefits of the various schemes/pro-grammes being funded by the centre.
Speaking as chief guest, Directorate of Trade, Commerce & Industries director Yumnam Robita urged artisans present at the programme to not only sell their handicrafts, but take advantage of the Gandhi Shilp Bazar to share ideas and techniques with their colleagues for producing quality products.
The function was also attended by national awardee (wood carving) W Umakanta Singh as president.
The handicraft exhibition is being participated by 50 artisans.
