Ukhrul, October 22 2021:
An offshoot of a recent seminar held in the town, 'Paint Ukhrul', a street art project, is bringing dozens of local painting artists, both professionals and amateurs, together for a common cause - to make Ukhrul town a colourful gallery of artworks.
Kicking off the project in the town on Friday, a total of around 40 painters took part in painting the walls in front of the district's mini secretariat, Hamleikhong.
The project was initiated by Sorei Keishing, proprietor of Tandet Art Cafe, Lemyao Shimray of Ukhrul-based NGO Naga Wire and former Miss Manipur AR Mathing.
The idea of painting the town with street art, took shape during a seminar held at the town hall on October 16 last.
As a show of support and solidarity to the works of the local artists, retried bureaucrat Ram Muivah showed up at the site and inspected each of the artworks around 2 pm.
Flanked by 'Paint Ukhrul' team members, Ram Muivah expressed his appreciation for the initiative which aimed to beautify the township.
"I appreciate what the local artists are doing today.
This is such a noble service you are rendering for our beloved town," he said.
According to the former NEC Secretary, Ukhrul town must be kept clean and beautiful.
"Ukhrul is the Jerusalem of Manipur because Christianity started here and education in the hills also started here," Muivah remarked.
Muivah who is reportedly seeking NPF ticket to run for the forthcoming state assembly elections from 44 Ukhrul AC, stated that he's now on a commitment called 'Mission Ukhrul' to transform and bring positive changes in the township.
Talking to media persons on the sidelines of the painting event, Sorei Keishing informed that 'Paint Ukhrul' is an initiative to make Ukhrul a beautiful township, enveloped with colourful art works.
"So, our target is to paint all available walls and spaces of the entire township," he said.
He said that the team has around 80 painting artists who will take turns to participate in the painting project.
The theme of the project is specifically based on the concept of culture, flora and fauna, environment and social issues, Keishing said.
"Through this initiative, we aim to provide our young local artists with platform and exposure needed to make them grow and develop professionally, ' said Lemyao Shimray.
She said that the initiative is setting a target to cover the entire Ukhrul town with 1000 paintings by 2023, and added that the same would be a kaleidoscope of classical and contemporary art works.
