Country, state yet to be open defecation free

Imphal, May 22 2022: Even though the country was declared open defecation free under Swachh Bharat Mission in the year 2019, a report of National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), 2019-21 has said that around 25 percent of the total households in India still practice open defecation.

The report released on May 5 also mentioned that open defecation is still being practiced by 0.5 percent of the total households in Manipur, which also means that there is no sanitation facility in 0.5 percent of the total households of the state.

It also said that 62 percent of the total households in Manipur have basic sanitation service while 32 percent households have combined sanitation service for two or three houses.

Among the districts, 99 percent of households in Ukhrul and Tamenglong districts have toilet facility, it added.

According to the NFHS-5 report, individuals owned 78 percent of the total households of Manipur, of which 79 percent are in rural area and 76 percent in Urban area.

It also said that 98 percent of households in urban area own mobile phone while 95 percent of households open bank account or post office account.

The report further said that 41 percent of the total households in Manipur own motorcycle and 45 percent of households have bicycle.

As per the NFHS-5 report, 23 percent of the total households in Manipur are 'pucca' houses and 77 percent have water sources.

However, only 21 percent of the total households have water pipeline that too only 30 percent in urban area and 15 percent in rural area.

It also said that 70 percent of the total households in Manipur use LPG or clean fuel.
