Unity essential to tackle terrorism: Ex-CM Ibobi

Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) observed the 33rd Anti-Terrorism Day on Tuesday at its BT Road Congress Bhawan, here, held to mourn the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in a suicide bomb attack on May 21, 1991.The event marked by offering of floral tributes to the photo of Rajiv Gandhi, served as a reminder of the devastating impact of terrorism and reinforces the commitment to combat such threats.
Speaking at the commemorative event, former chief minister and leader of Congress Legislative Party (CLP) 0 Ibobi Singh informed Rajiv Gandhi's assassination is observed as anti-terrorism day, in India and the world to pledge and stand united against the menace of terrorism.
He recounted that the foreign policy formulated by Rajiv Gandhi has helped strengthen India's relationships with neighbouring countries.
However, he was against the movement of LTTE, a militant organisation having roots in India and posing threat to the integrity of neighbouring country Sri Lanka.
As part of India's foreign policy, Rajiv Gandhi helped Sri Lanka by sending in Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) to assist in resolving the conflict.
Opposing the intervention and viewing it as a threat to their goals, LTTE assassinated Rajiv Gandhi with the help of a suicide bomber during a public rally in Tamil Nadu, Ibobi elaborated.
Further stating that assassination of Rajiv Gandhi is a loss for the entire world, he remem bered the then Prime Minister as a leader who could foresee the changes in the world.
His demise is not only a loss for the Congress but for the entire nation, Ibobi said, while highlighting the need for collective efforts to combat terrorism and ensure peace and security for all.
The observance function was also attended by MPCC president K Meghachandra, BCC office bearers, Congress Working Committee members, ex-MLAs and leaders of district and block committees.
