Imphal, November 18 2015:
Loktak Lake Development Committee (LLDC) has threatened to ban all Loktak lake cleaning activities undertaken by Loktak Development Authority (LDA) if the LDA fails to release bills worth around Rs 3.5 crore of 166 sub-contractors.
A boat rally was held on Tuesday at Loktak Lake against holding back of bills for 166 sub-contractors by the LDA.
President of LLDA, Oinam Paka said that Manipur Government had handed over the work contracts of cleaning of phumdis from Loktak Lake to K-Pro Company and LDA.
As part of the contract, 166 sub-contractors in 2011 undertook bamboo fencing work to tighten the phumdis collected by the K-Pro Company.
The bamboo work was undertaken with an aim to provide shelter to wild birds and animals and also to make the Loktak Lake water neat and clean.
Paka further said that LDA has held back the bills even after they finished the work three and half years before.
When K-Pro Company was contacted with regard to the issue, they were told to contact LDA and when the LDA Project Director was contacted, they were told that the bills should be released by the K-Pro Company not the LDA, said Paka, He added that Chief Minister O Ibobi had also ordered LDA to release the related bills earlier.
Paka said that the 166 sub-contractors used around one thousand labourers in the work but they have not been paid their wages since the authorities has held back the bills.
Appealing the Government to immediately look into the matter and bring an amicable solution, the LLDC President demanded the LDA to release the amounts before the Sangai Festival which falls on November 21 and warned of imposing a ban all Loktak Lake cleaning activities of LDA if the authorities fails to release the bills.
