Students threaten self immolation

Joint students' union of higher secondary schools announced that they will give up education if the State government does not reopen the schools and colleges which have been closed down following the alleged killing of Robinhood on July 8 in a police action during a protest rally against the controversial ILPS bill.
Dayanand, member of the joint higher secondary union in a press meet held at Pung Makhong, Nongmeibung said that they condemned the act of government in shutting down schools and colleges to suppress the students' movements.
He also wondered if the State government could suppress the public movement by simply shutting down schools and colleges.
He further said that appeal has already been made to reopen schools for students to pursue their education, but the government turned a deaf ear to their demand; therefore students were asked to give up education voluntarily as a mark of protest.
The joint students' union also condemned the killing of Robinhood, a class eleven student of Ananda Singh Higher Secondary Academy who was taking part in the protest demanding for implementation of a proper ILPS to safeguard the indigenous people of the State.
The union also condemned the state government for not taking adequate measures to address the grievances in regard to the killing of Robinhood and also charged the government with playing delay tactics in trying to suppress the public movement.
The union also said that they will continue the agitation till a proper Inner Line Permit System in Manipur is implimented to safeguard the indigenous people.
If needed they will give up their life, said Dayanand representative of the joint students' union.
Meanwhile the joint students' union have also started to lock institutes on Friday as the government have not opened schools and colleges.
