Joint Committee against Heirok Branch Canal has warned of dire consequences if the decision of the State Government to construct the proposed mega canal is not cancelled.
On Thursday, the committee organized a press meet at Manipur Press Club.
Convenor of the committee M Jarma said the planned mega canal would seriously affect the livelihood of thousands of villagers.
He said several acres of farm land will be wiped out by the canal which will pass several kilometers through residential areas and paddy fields.
The committee had on March 28 sent a memorandum to the Prime Minister seeking his intervention in the controversial project, Jarma said.
He cited uselessness of the failed Singda Dam, Khuga Dam and Khoupum Dam which have not been able to supply irrigation water till date.
Jarma claimed that the Thoubal Left Main Canal of Thoubal Project, which is to supply water to the projected Heirok Branch Canal, has failed to supply irrigation water for the past 20 years.
All paddy fields located on the back of the canal often face dry spell every year, he said.
He urged the State Government to withdraw the plan and warned of dire consequences if it acts against the will of the people.
