Imphal, January 16 2025:
In an open defiance of government authority, the Hill Tribal Council (HTC), Moreh, has issued a stern directive to all government and private schools in Moreh town to remove the Manipuri subject from their syllabus starting from the academic year 2025-2026 .
In a press statement, HTC, Moreh, stated, "It is hereby notified for information to all government and private schools of Moreh town to drop Manipuri/Meetei Mayek subject from your school syllabus starting this academic year (2025-2026)". The council said that the directive was issued to ensure that students are taught "useful and productive" subjects while respecting the sentiments and culture of the "indigenous" Kuki-Zo community, particularly in light of the ongoing political conflict.
HTC asked students to opt for other subjects, including Hindi, English, or any Modern Indian Language (MIL) such as Mizo, Thadou, Hmar, Zou, Maring, Anal, Vaiphei, Paite, and Gangte.
The council also warned of strict consequences in case any of the schools do not comply with the directive, stating, "Non-compliance to this notice may invite penalty" .
The move by the HTC comes amidst heightened tensions in the region and reflects the council's effort to align the educational curriculum with the cultural and political aspirations of the Kuki-Zo community.
The directive is likely to draw attention from various quarters, given its implications for the education system in the border town of Moreh.
