Kangpokpi celebrates Janjatiya Gaurav Divas

To commemorate the glorious history of tribal people, culture and achievements, the nation is celebrating Janjatiya Gaurav Divas on the birth anniversary of the iconic tribal leader Birsa Munda and Kangpokpi district joined the first ever nationwide celebration on Monday.
The celebration organised by.BJP ST, Morcha Sadar Hills in Kangpokpi Town was attended by BJP ST Morcha Manipur Pradesh president Lanjagai Kamei, treasurer Emmins J Philathing, media convener Mayangam Rungsung and assistant media convener Paokingai.
The event hosted Sadar Hills Morcha president Thanglien-sei Kipgen was also attended by leaders of various civil society organisations, BJP workers and locals.
While paying tribute to Birsa Munda, Lanjagai Kamei said that Birsa Munda who was born on November 15,1875 was an Indian freedom fighter, religious leader and folk hero from the Munda tribe of Chhota Nagpur plateau area.
He fought for the rights of tribal people and one of his biggest fights against the British was when he gathered tribal people and marched for the remission of tax collected by the zamindars from the tribes in October 1894, Lanjagai Kamei recalled.
He also recalled that in March 1900, while fighting the British alongside his guerrilla army, Munda was arrested in Jamkopai forest in Chakradharpur and a few months later on June 9 he passed away while in custody.
The decision to commemorate November 15 as Janjatiya .Gaurav Divas is also an attempt to honour brave tribal freedom fighters and make the youth aware of their sacrifices, Lanjagai Kamei said, while adding that as per the government's decision the day will be celebrated every year and would recognise the efforts of tribals in the preservation of cultural heritage.
He also said that the government's decision to celebrate Janjatiya Gaurav Divas is for all tribal freedom fighters and so every tribal should celebrate and commemorate all the tribal freedom fighters.
Morcha president Thangliensei Kipgen said that despite immense sacrifices and contribution made the tribals in India's freedom movement, they were not given their due by the earlier governments and the tribal were deprived of basic facilities.
The BJP ST Morcha leaders paid floral tributes to the departed soul of Birsa Munda as a mark of respect and honour on the occasion.
