Imphal, December 11 2020:
The International Human Rights Day was observed by Committee on Human Rights (COHR), Manipur yesterday at its office in Singjamei Wangma Bheigyabati Leikai.
This year the observance was held as a low key affair adhering to the SOPs due to the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic.
The meeting was presided by its chairman Phulindro Konsam.
COHR stressed on the history and importance of this day and stated that the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights(UDHR) on December 10, 1948 .
This year the day is observed under the theme, "Recover Better - Stand Up for Human Rights' .
The theme is closely associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and focuses on the need to build back better by ensuring human rights are central to recovery efforts.
However in contrary to the various International laws and principles on human rights, in the name of National security and law and order many draconian laws have been imposed in Manipur, the most prominent being the Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958 among others.
With the imposition of such laws, the human rights of the people have been violated to a great level, said COHR.
The committee resolved to make the best use of laws and principles given by the United Nations in safeguarding the rights of the people of Manipur and to strive for an equal society free from all atrocities.
