'Dept of V&AH Services planning to import improved pig breeds from the UK'

A three-day ABI training programme on "Piggery Based Entrepreneurship Development" was kicked off by Agri-Business Incubation Centre (ABI) of ICAR, Manipur Centre at ICAR today.
The inaugural function was attended by Dr H Chaoba, Director, Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services, GoM and Dr N Prakash, Joint Director, ICAR, Manipur Centre as the chief guest and president, respectively.
Dr H Chaoba, in his speech, lauded ICAR for organizing an important training programme and described various Government schemes for piggery based entrepreneurship development.
He also laid down important tips on care and management of pigs.
The Director further informed the participants that the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services is planning to import some improved pig breeds from the United Kingdom.
Meanwhile, Dr N Prakash briefly explained the activities of ABI and huge potential of piggery as agri-business venture.
He also opined that the rising feed cost for pigs and poultry is the major bottlenecks in the State and added that, to overcome the constraint, ICAR is working on area expansion of maize which can be used as protein rich livestock feed.
The welcome address and vote of thanks were delivered by Dr B Sailo (Course Coordinator) and DrSSS, Roy (In-charge, ABI), respectively.
25 progressive pig growers and aspiring entrepreneurs from different districts of Manipur are participating in the training programme, said a press release issued by Joint Director, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre.
The training will not only cover the theory and practical aspects of improved pig production technology but will elaborate the guidelines, of piggery-based entrepreneurship development in Manipur.
