Imphal, August 11 2022:
Manipur Human Rights Commission acting chairman Khaidem Mani has urged the people to exert pressure on the central government for attaining special autonomy status of Manipur.
Speaking as chief guest during a discussion programme on Instrument of Accession organised by All Manipur Youth Protection Committee (AMYPCO) at Lizard community hall located, Wangkhei Meihoubam Lampak on Thursday, Khaidem Mani emphasised that people should unite in exerting pressure on the centre for granting special autonomy status to Manipur.
While stating that bringing good governance and making the elected representatives to work properly is a must, he maintained that civil society organisations have a huge responsibility to play in the matter.
It is disheartening that there has been chasm between the hills and the valley people, he said and called upon all concerned to contribute their mite in foiling attempts by disruptive elements to create fissures in the society.
Khaidem Mani further stated that Manipur Human Rights Commission exists for protecting the rights of the people and anyone can approach the commission if their rights are threatened or violated by the government or any other.
However, the demands should be legitimate, he made it clear.
Mani also described as unfortunate that some CSOs are resorting to extreme form of agitations such as imposition of economic blockade in-spite of being fully aware that bid to cut off the supply chain of essential goods tantamount to committing crime against humanity.
Such unlawful activities could extract huge fine under section 18 of Protection of Human Rights against those involved, he cautioned.
While maintaining that arresting people involved in imposing economic blockade is the bounden duty of the government, he said confusion arises when detained persons are after the government holds talk with them and reaches an understanding.
As such, it is questionable whether the government is aiding the wrongdoers, he posed.
The discussion programme presided over by AMYPCO president Thiyam Saratchan dra was also attended by CCSK president Jitendra Ningomba and Lizard club president K Bimol as guests of honour.
