Imphal, April 09 2019:
Taking serious note of BJP's election manifesto which promises to enact Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) in case the party is returned to power, Congress party has raised an alarm bell saying that the rival party's manifesto has put all the people of the North East region on the threshold of life and death.
Speaking to media persons at Congress Bhavan here today, Congress spokesman and former Minister I Hemochandra asserted that the BJP's election manifesto threatens the future of all the indigenous communities of the entire North East region.
Manipuri people would have no future if CAB is enforced in the midst of the sustained mass movement against incessant influx and the Manipur People Bill which is still kept at bay even though the Bill was passed by the Manipur Legislative Assembly unanimously, Hemochandra said.
He dismissed the State BJP leaders' claim to insert a special clause in CAB so as to exempt Manipur from its purview as mere lip service which is not practical at all.
Contrary to BJP's manifesto, Congress manifesto says without any ambiguity that Congress party would oppose/withdraw CAB, Hemochandra pointed out.
BJP's promise to bring back CAB only exposed its apathy to the hurt sentiments of North East people and that they don't care about the minority indigenous communities of the region, he remarked.
Political developments seen during the last 24 hours have put all the North East people on the threshold of life and death.
As such, all the electors need to exercise their right to vote conscientiously in order to protect the indigenous people and future generations.
Talking about AFSPA, Hemochandra pointed out that Congress has vowed to review the infamous Act in case the party is elected to power.
AFSPA is a National issue and it is not confined to Manipur or North East alone.
Saying that nobody wishes AFSPA to remain in force any longer, the Congress spokesman asked the BJP-led Governments of the State and the Centre to repeal the Act if they are sincere enough rather than blaming Congress party.
