Another Moreh IDP succumbs, toll climbs to 13

The plight of Meeteis displaced from Moreh continues to worsen, with 13 internally displaced persons (IDPs) losing their lives in relief camps over the past 21 months.
These individuals, who fled their homes on the evening of May 3, 2023, following a violent attack by Kuki mobs, who vandalised and torched their properties, have been living in dire conditions across various relief camps.
Lacking proper facilities, basic amenities, and access to essential healthcare, the IDPs are staring at an uncertain future.
Concerns over privacy, income sources, health, and dignity of life remain paramount for these displaced individuals.
The deteriorating physical and mental health of many IDPs has led to tragic consequences, with 13 reported deaths so far.
The latest victim, Takhellambam Tanoubi Devi of Moreh Ward No 7, Chingdong Leikai, had been residing at the Wangjing Kodompokpi Sports Complex relief camp.
She had been battling an ailment for some time, and with her condition worsening and lacking financial support for proper treatment, she recently moved to a relative's house, where she passed away on Saturday.
Three other IDPs from Moreh staying in the same relief camp had also died under similar circumstances, in the recent past.
They were identified as Mayanglambam Inao Singh of Moreh Ward No 8 Dharmashala Maning, Modhu Setary of Moreh Ward No 6 Tali Road, and Luwangsangbam Mitlubi Leima of Moreh Ward No 7 Heinoumakhong.
A similar pattern of deaths has been reported from the relief camp at Lamding Higher Secondary School, where three IDPs succumbed to their worsening health conditions.
They were Thokchom Mema Leima of Moreh, Wangkhem Brojen and Saikhom Nanao Meitei both of Moreh Ward No 9 Khunou Leikai.
Another displaced individual, Hidam Ibema Devi of Moreh Ward No 4 Premnagar Leikai, passed away while staying at the Mayang-Imphal UFO relief camp.
Furthermore, five more IDPs from Moreh lost their lives at the Ideal Girls' College relief camp, Akampat, Imphal East.
They were Khundrakpam Abung Meitei of Moreh Ward No 7 Heinoumakhong Leikai, Laishram Nimaichand Singh of Kwatha, Nongmaithem Khambi Leima of Moreh Ward No 7 Chingdong Leikai, Leihaothabam Madhabi Leima of Moreh Ward No 7 Turel Wangma Leikai, and Oinam Jack Singh of Moreh Ward No 7 Heinoumakhong Leikai.
Apart from these fatalities, several other displaced persons from Moreh are currently undergoing treatment at RIMS Hospital for various health conditions, ranging from kidney disorders to cancer.
Expressing deep concern over their dire condition, Leishangthem Tameng Leima, a representative of the Moreh IDPs at Lamding Higher Secondary School relief camp, urged the government to take immediate steps to resolve the crisis.
She stressed the urgent need for intervention to ensure that the displaced persons could return home and rebuild their lives.
With no concrete measures in place for their rehabilitation, the displaced residents of Moreh continue to endure hardships, facing deteriorating health, financial struggles, and an uncertain future.
Their appeal for immediate government intervention remains unaddressed as they struggle for survival in relief camps.
