COCOMI's public emergency leaves Manipur deserted

Market places and other public areas in different parts of Manipur sported a deserted look as the indefinite public emergency declared by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) took effect from Saturday.
COCOMI had declared public emergency to ensure safety of the people of Manipur, whose lives have been threatened by Kuki narco terrorists, while both the central and state governments continue to look on silently.
Consequent to the announcement of public emergency, Khwairamband market in the heart of Imphal as well as shops at Paona Bazar, Thangal Bazar and Nagamapal shut their doors.
Other markets, shops and public places in different areas of the valley including Tiddim road also sported a deserted look.
Passenger service vehicles did not operate on the roads except for private vehicles.
Schools and colleges also remained closed with the government declaring Saturday a holiday a day earlier.
Meanwhile, students of Thoubal College staged a protest in Yairipok Lamkhai of Thoubal Melaground on Saturday, shouting slogans for saving lives of students and allowing them to study.
After the protest, the students took out a rally till the gate of Deputy Commissioner Thoubal, where they submitted a memorandum containing their demands including demands to uphold their right to life and right to education.
The memorandum also urged for restoring peace and normalcy in the state.
