Senapati, December 06 2024:
The 50th anniversary of the martyrdom of SP Thuinganing Thomas was commemorated in an event organised by the Poumai Naga Catholic Me (PNCM), in collaboration with the Senapati District Catholic Union (SDCU) at the SP Thuinganing Thomas Shrine in Ngari Raidulomai (Lower) village under the Phaibung Sub-Division, on the theme: "I will not renounce my Catholic faith even if I have to die" .
The event was marked by the unveiling of a memorial stone by Bishop of Kohima, Nagaland, Most Rev Dr James Thoppil, while Rev Fr Francis Nganingmi delivered the welcoming address.
A Holy Mass led by archbishop of Imphal Most Rev Dr Linus Neli, and Bishop James Thoppil, served as the spiritual centrepiece of the commemoration.
During his homily, archbishop Linus Neli emphasised the central Christian virtue of forgiveness, drawing parallels between the martyrdom of SP Thuinganing Thomas and the teachings of Jesus Christ.
He urged the congregation to embrace values of love, peace, harmony and forgiveness - principles that transcend denominational boundaries and serve as the foundation of Christian life.
In their addresses, PNCM president Dehe Daniel, remarked, "We are not here to commemorate the death of SP Thuinganing Thomas but to celebrate the cause of his death - not how he died, but why he was killed", as Bishop James Thoppil also reflected on the broader impact of Thomas' martyrdom, noting, "The martyrdom has sown seeds of faith in the Poumai and the entire Northeast community.
We must now begin the process of his canonization".
The event concluded with a communal feast hosted by the local community, symbolising fellowship and unity.
