Elderly diabetic man with heart disease overcomes COVID-19

Imphal, August 01 2021: In what could be another miracle of medical science, a 70-year old diabetic man who had already undergone heart surgery and surviving with the help of a heart device managed to overcome severe COVID-19 conditions after successful treatment at Shija Hospitals and Research Institute, Langol.

Sharing his emotion and happiness after overcoming COVID-19 with The People's Chronicle, the man identified as Angom Tombi of Thambalkhong in Imphal East district said that he had no hope of survival moments after confirmation of contracting COVID-19 but Shija hospitals gave a new lease of life.

Tombi recounted that serious condition of his heart was diagnosed in year 2006 and he underwent surgery the same year at PGIMER, Chandigarh where the doctor who conducted the operation guaranteed him only ten years of survival.

Accordingly he reportedly remained at home most of the time since then.

"Coinciding with the time given by the PGIMER doctor, I began to experience breathing problem in the year 2016 and health conditions too deteriorated," Tombi said adding that he then went to Fortis Hospital in New Delhi and had a CRT-D combo installed in his heart.

"After installing CRT-D combo, I had to be extra cautious as life given after installing the device was only five years.

As the time for changing battery of the device as told by the hospital approached in 2020, I was preparing to visit the hospital for the same, but severe COVID 19 wave in the country compelled me to delay the visit.

Amidst this crucial period of life and death, suddenly I contracted COVID -19 in the last week of May this year and nobody including me ever thought of surviving from the disease much due to the already deteriorated health condition," Tombi said.

"After contracting COVID-19, nursing officer Rejiya admitted me to Shija hospitals and underwent treatment at ICU ward of the private hospital for two days in an unconscious state.

Everybody thought that I had no chance of survival for being a diabetic and artificial device in my heart.

However, doctors and staff of the hospital, particularly young doctor Javed (consultant physician), took my severe health condition as a challenge and accordingly started giving treatment," Tombi said, adding that he could recover from COVID-19 due to extra vig il and attention paid by doctors and staff of the hospital round the clock.

He also thanked Shija hospitals for giving him another life.
