International Overdose Awareness Day

As in other parts of the world, International Overdose Awareness Day was observed by Community Network for Environment (CONE) at Manipur Press Club here today.
Speaking on the occasion as Chief Guest, Dr Nabakishore Mangang, State Epidemiologist, Directorate of Health Service, observed that there is a need to put certain drugs for treatment of overdose under essential drug list as life saving drugs like Nelozone which is cheap in price but highly effective and is being sold at much higher rate in pharmacies.
He maintained that if such drugs which are used in treating drug overdose cases are included under essential drug list then it will be available at free cost of cost in primary health centres and hospitals.
He further stressed on the need for giving more awareness on overdose to drug addicts for bringing them in mainstream and added that they must be also encouraged to contribute their parts towards betterment of the society.
RK Nilkanta, president of CONE who presided over the function said that there have been instances where many people especially youths died of drug overdose which needs prompt intervention and urged the government to take up steps to ensure that certain drugs which are used in treating overdose cases are made available in hospitals.
