Imphal, July 31 2024:
Senior Opposition leader Okram Ibobi Singh has strongly called for taking a collective decision of all the members of the House to facilitate return of those currently languishing in relief camps to their respective homes.
Taking part in the discussion on the Motion of Thanks on Governor's Address on the first day of the 6th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, Ibobi said five Opposition members in the House could do nothing to object demand for grants for different departments when moved in the budget session as the same would be approved due to overwhelming majority of the government and its allies.
Returning displaced people to their respective homes is more important than discussion for the demands for grants in the House, he said.
While suggesting that the House could take a collective decision for resettlement of the displaced people after taking views and opinions of all the members, O Ibobi even called for convening a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee so that discussion for demands for grants for different departments could be curtailed to two days.
He further said that the remaining days of the nine-day session could be utilised for discussion on resolving the crisis and returning displaced people to their respective homes.
Those in the relief camps with tears in their eyes for more than one year would not like to hear about passing of demands for grants worth crore of rupees in the House.
What they want is return to their native homes only and nothing else, O Ibobi said and strongly appealed custodian of the House to allow shortening time for discussion on demands for grants and allot sufficient time for discussion on resolving the crisis and return of the displaced people to their respective homes.
