Tamenglong, October 30 2012:
With the Government keeping its eyes and ears shut to the long-pending demand, repairing work along Tamenglong Halflong Road has been started from public contribution.
The stretch from Tamenglong headquarters to Halflong is over 150 kms , but even to this day the road from Tamenglong to Phoklong is not motorable, and the problem of transportation faced by the people has been compounded further after the Makhru bridge was washed away in the last torrential rains.
For the repairing of the road, various social organizations have been petitioning the government for the last many years, but in vain.
Consequently, work along the road has been started with the villagers themselves contributing the required amount.
Everyday about 100 villagers are being engaged in the work.
So far, landslides over a distance of 16 kms have been cleared from Makhru River to Tousem and road cutting work from Phoklong to Katangnam and then upto Jiri River has started by deploying 2 JCBs and one Bull Dozer.
One JCB has been contributed free of cost by Oklong village from Senapati for two months while the other belongs to Lungtuabui Pame, a young and enthusiastic entrepreneur from Tamenglong .
The bull dozer has been given by Mr.Asin of Azuram village at a highly subsidized rate.
The oil for the vehicles is entirely contributed by the people.
So far the SDO Tousem along with his family and staff has raised over Rs 4 lakhs and the villagers of Tousem, Phoklong, Katangnam, Taguaram and Katiang have contributed not only in the form of cash but also in the form of fooding and lodging for all the workforce.
Speaking to the reporterson the progress of the work along Tamenglong-Halflong road, Armstrong Pame, IAS, SDO Tousem said "I am very sure that once we all start this project the government will take it further.
We need to show that we are interested in this road.
It's my commitment that we will try our best to make this road at least a jeepable one before Christmas.
This would in fact be the best Christmas gift ever for the Zeliangrong people and those in Tousem area in particular" .
