Imphal, January 30 2015 :
Luwang, an abandoned eight months old male pony, has found a new home, thanks to the intervention made by Maneka Sanjay Gandhi, Chairperson of PFA India and Union Cabinet Minister of Woman and Child Development.
According to a statement issued L Biswajeet Meitei, Managing Trustee of People for Animals (PFA), Manipur, the young pony was sick due to a large septic wound on its left hind leg.
The owner abandoned the horse as he doesn't want to take the effort of treating the wound.
The poor horse spent days and nights walking along the road of Imphal with the pus dripping from the wound.
Hungry, thirsty, cold, homeless and in chronic pain, the lean pony waited its last day in the state where people proudly claimed 'Manipur gave the World the game of Polo' .
Bishwajeet pointed out that Pony, the indigenous horse of Manipur, is the part and parcel of the history, folklore, song, dance and poems of the state and its people.
Various Government machineries have been talking about plan to conserve the endangered animal whose number has been reduced to 500 only.
Many state level organisations were formed and a number of national and international Polo tournaments were held but no tangible development in the life of the horse has been seen.
Bishwajeet informed that the news of poor Luwang reached the office of Maneka Snjay Gandhi, Chairperson of PFA India and Union Cabinet Minister of Woman and Child Development, who instructed PFA Manipur and State Veterinary Department to rescue the poor horse.
The horse was rescued a week before and kept at the State Veterinary Hospital for treatment.
For a final solution, PFA Manipur convened a meeting under the advice of PFA India, at the office of Dy.
