Visiting Myanmarese Meetei feted

A reception programme of the Meitei-Burmese senior citizen, Kakchingtabam Sunder Gopal Sharma, who had come to witness The Sangai Festival 2013 was organized by the Manipur Peoples' Party (MPP) at the party's office along with presentation of Maibi dance and Khambana Cow Phaba episode.
Speaking on the occasion, the 76 year old Myanmar citizen told media persons that Meitei is a community living as a minority in Myanmar.

Around five lakhs Meitei community were settling in Myanmar at the time of British colonial rule, but the number has decreased to only 21,000 at present.
The main reason for the decline in the population of the community is due to migration and conversion to other communities, he added.
He hoped that with the return of democratic form of government in Myanmar, the population of Meiteis will increase.
He also said that since the Indo-Myanmar relation has tremendously improved, the Meitei people of Myanmar are awaiting to visit Manipur.
As a gesture to regulate smooth travel between Myanmar and Manipur tourists, he had met with the chief minister of Manipur, O.Ibobi to discuss ways to obtain the central government's approval for abolishing Protected Area Permit System (PAP) and also establish a passport maintenance office in Manipur soon, he added.
