Gold worth more than Rs 79 lakh seized

Imphal, July 25 2018:
Customs Division Imphal seized 16 gold rods weighing 2651 grams and worth more than Rs 79 lakh, from two non Manipuris at Khoyathong traffic point today morning.
Briefing media persons, RK Darendrajit, IRD Assistant Commissioner, Customs Division Imphal, informed that acting on specific information about gold smuggling in Imphal area, Customs Division officers arrested two non locals along with 2651 grams of gold from Khouyathong Traffic Point at around 11 am.
The seized gold, 16 in number and in the form or rods, were found in hidden compartments of two trolley bags.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Gurpreet Singh of Bheru Patiala and Jograj of Rurki Budha Patiala Punjab, Darendrajit said.
He continued that officers of the Customs Division Imphal have used different methods to detect smuggled gold and added that the gold rods seized today was found coated with silver and it was only after burning the silver coat that the colour of the rod turned to gold.
He also demonstrated the process to the media persons with the seized gold rods.
Darendrajit stated that stated the value of the seized gold rods is worth Rs 79,90,114 in the local market and the two smugglers were arrested while they were trying to transport the gold by road up to the National capital.
