DESAM demands water policy

Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has urged the State Government to take immediate measures to prevent water scarcity and demanded a long term water policy for the State.
Speaking to the media, M Angamba, President DESAM said Government of Manipur have sanctioned adequate amount of money to initiate development works to solve water problems but water scarcity in the State is due to the negligence of responsible departments.
Angamba informed that according to 2014-15 Budget, Government has sanctioned Rs 247.81 core to the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), out of which Rs 50.05 is for employee salary and other office mainte-nance and Rs 197.76 core is for development works.
Minor Irrigation (MI) department was sanctioned Rs 123.76 core, Rs 14.51 core accounts for Salary and other office maintenance while Rs 108.75 is for development works informed DESAM president.
Similarly, Irrigation and Flood Control Department (IFCD) was allotted Rs 312.06 core where Rs 67.71 goes to salary and office maintenance and Rs 244.35 for development works informed Angamba.
In addition, adequate rainfall was reported in the year 2012, 2013 and 2014 with 1325.2mm, 1639.1 and 1256.6mm respectively.
DESAM pointed out that there should be enough water for all.
