Imphal, December 24, 2013:
About 70 kilograms of biomedical wastes, which were piled up inside the fake biomedical waste disposal plant run by Rural Multipurpose Development Organization (RMDO) at Samurou Makha Leikai in Imphal West, have been disposed properly at Shija Biomedical Waste Management and Treatment Centre, Langol here today.
The biomedical waste disposal plant run by RMDO was shut down by the officials of Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB) on December 20 following Hueiyen Lanpao's report on the malpractices of the plant.
A team of MPCB officials comprising Assistant Environmental Engineer Mayengbam Bangajit, Sample Collector T Umananda Sharma and Field Inspector H Robindro inspected the sealed biomedical waste disposal plant today.
As per the directive of MPCB, the representatives of RMDO handed over the biomedical wastes piled up inside the plant to Shija Biomedical Waste Management and Treatment Centre for proper disposal.
On the other hand, MPCB would look into the management of biomedical wastes by those hospitals and clinics which are earlier served by RMDO.
Strict action would be taken if those healthcare centres were found violating the Biomedical Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 1998, the MPCB officials said.
