Imphal, March 24 2025:
It was unreasonable to bring out and discuss Armed Forces' Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958 during the recent MHA (Ministry of Home Affairs) meeting, contended Justice Committee on Anglo-Manipuri War, 1891 Martyrs and Freedom Fighters of Kangleipak (Manipur) chairman Joychandra Konthoujam and demanded immediate repeal of the draconian law.
Joychandra shared his observation on the occasion of 'Remembrance day of attack on Kangla and floral tribute to exiled freedom fighters' held Monday at Bir Tikendrajit Park, here.
Addressing the gathering at the event organised by Justice Committee, Joychandra said AFSPA, 1958 is not only an outdated Act but also violates human rights and accordingly considered as draconian by the global people.
However, it is very unfortunate that the Government of India imposes and repeals the draconian law anytime in Manipur.
Such acts have made it clear that the government of India's intention is to suppress Manipur, he added.
Regarding the event, the chairman recalled that the Anglo-Manipuri war of 1891 signified the clear decision of the people of Kangleipak (Manipur) to exist as sovereign nation.
Forefathers of the land fought the war to live independently even for one day than to serve as slaves and their message is being passed on to the present generation, he said adding that it is the responsibility of the present generation to preserve the legacy passed down by the valiant forefathers.
The commemorative event was also attended by professor Naorem Joykumar, independent researcher professor K Jugindro Singh, Jamandar Chingsuba Ningthouba's descendent Chingsubam Laicha and Luwang Ningthou Colonel Maisnam Shamu's descendent Maisnam Ibochouba.
