Imphal, May 23 2023:
Several organisations denounced the assault on media persons and fire service personnel by central security forces while they were on duty to cover news and save fire at New Lambulane on Wednesday.
In separate releases, North-East Fo-rum for International Solidarity (NE - FIS) and Kanglei Ima Lup (KIL) strongly condemned the attack on media persons and Manipur Fire Service personnel by security forces.
Despite their press cards being promi-nently displayed to establish their identity as media persons, they were beaten up while reporting, the bodies contended, while adding that such atrocities is con-demnable in the strongest terms as it is an assault on freedom of press.
Vested interests do not want independent media to exist so as to further their agenda.
Thus, such assaults are covertly endorsed by the ruling elites, the releases added.
Demanding to the government to pun-ish the security personnel involved so that such unfortunate incidents do not recur, they also cautioned that the public may not extend cooperation to the security forces.
While informing that Sri Krishna Clas-sical Yoga Group of India sent a memoran-dum to Army headquarters stating that the army and Assam Rifles have committed excesses by assaulting media persons.
In a release, the Group conveyed that they talked with an army general through telephone with the latter assuring that the wrongdoers, be they army or Assam Rifles, will be punished.
However, the general insisted on furnishing names and details of the army and the battalion.
