Border village, hamlet torched in Kamjong

Ukhrul, April 23 2025:
A village and its hamlet, both inhabited by the Kuki community in the border region of Kamjong district, were set ablaze by unidentified miscreants on Wednesday morning, prompting the district magistrate to impose prohibitory order in the area.
According to an order issued by the district magistrate hours after the incident, the fires at Gampal and its hamlet, Haiyang, were reported around 9, raising concerns about potential law and order disturbances and threats to public peace in the region.
The order, enacted under Sub-section 1 of Section 163 of the BNSS 2023, restricts movements outside residences and any activities that could further disrupt public order, effective from 2 pm the same day.
Meanwhile, reports reaching here said, that details regarding the identity of the arsonists or their motives remain unclear.
Gampal having around eight houses and Haiyang with about six, are situated between Kachouphung Tangkhul village and Kashung village, around 80 km northeast of Kamjong district headquarters.
Following the incident, residents of Kachouphung Kuki village sought refuge in Kachouphung Tangkhul village, according to local sources.
No casualty has been reported till the filing of this report.
Meanwhile, in light of the incident, the Eastern Kuki Chiefs' Association (EKCA) urged the public to avoid sharing unverified information circulating on social media until the facts surrounding the incident are confirmed.
