The government is investigating into the report published in a New Delhi based magazine about Al Qaida recruiting some youths from Manipur, said Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, who also holds the portfolio of Home, said on the floor of the State Assembly today.
Replying to a calling attention motion raised by MLA L Ibomcha, Gaikhangam said that investigation is going on over the reports that the terrorist outfit Al Qaida recruited around 17 youths from the State.
He informed that there are names of some youths from Lilong in the list of recruited people published in the magazine and acting on it, verification on the names and their addresses mentioned in the list was done by Lilong police.
During the verification, names and address included in the list of people believed to have recruited by Al Qaida could not be located in the area.
However, the government is taking the reports seriously.
Proper and in-depth investigation over the reports will be further carried out to ascertain its veracity, he said.
MLA Ibomcha said that there had been an instance where a youth from Lilong whose name was included in the list had clarified that he is not related with the reports in any way but the remaining others have not yet clarified over their names and address mentioned in the list.
Observing that the State government should not take the reports lightly, the MLA urged the government to establish contact with the magazine and find out veracity of the disturbing reports.
