Imphal, November 19 2021:
The announcement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to withdraw the three contentious farm laws, passed by the BJP government forcefully in the parliament, is a victory of unity of farmers across the country and BJP took the decision keeping in view of the forthcoming assembly elections in five states, according to Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee.
Addressing a press conference at Congress Bhawan here on Friday, MPCC vice-president Kh Devbrata welcomed the announcement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to repeal the three farm laws - Farmer Producers Trade and Commerce (Promotion Facilitation) Act 2020, Farmers Empowerment Protection Agreement on Price Assurance Act 2020, and Farm Services and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act 2020 in the upcoming winter session of the parliament.
However, the PM cited the reason as inability to convince some section of the farmers and their continued protest, which is wrong.
Congress believes that the BJP government took the decision oh seeing its imminent defeat in the forthcoming assembly elections in five states after suffering defeat in the by-elections in Himachal Pradesh.
The announcement came after farmers from across the country carried out protest for one year, three months and one week.
It is a victory of the farmers and defeat of the BJP government.
As per Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) report, 82 per cent of the total population of the country live on the income generated from farming sector.
Around 70 per cent of the country's total population are farmers and they constitute 50 per cent of the total electors of India.
On seeing the possibility of losing the votes of 50 per cent of electors, BJP had no choice but to withdraw the three farm laws.
They did it for politics and not for the love and care of the farmers.
Only if they truly care for the farmers, they would have repealed the Acts when hundreds of farmers have either died or injured.
They took the decision on seeing their imminent defeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Kh Devbrata reiterated.
