Imphal, September 18 2015 :
Public awareness should be the priority to keep Imphal city clean and increasing the strength of staff of Imphal Municipal Council will not help much towards this end, Chief Minister O Ibobi stated on Friday.
The Chief Minister was speaking during the opening function of a 'State Level Consultative Workshop on Municipal Resource Mobilisation and Implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) & NULM organized by Manipur Urban Development Agency (MUDA) at City Convention Centre, Imphal.
Ibobi said that local bodies play a pivotal role in a democratic set up and therefore steps are needed to make them self-reliant.
He pointed out that thousands of people from different parts of the nine districts come to Imphal day everyday and this is why the capital city should be kept clean, Ibobi said.
IMC will get more revenue if various municipal-by laws are enforced properly, Ibobi suggested.
The Government has been contemplating the empowerment of all local bodies in the State, he added.
Ibobi said the State employees are also demanding salary increment in line with Sixth Pay Commission, but there are certain obstacles being faced by the State Government.
The Government wants to fulfill the demand, but the financial crunch has prevented it, he said.
