Imphal, July 17 2014:
As part of its ongoing cease work strike launched demanding release of due salaries and increase of wages, the CAF & PD Laborers' Welfare Association took out a protest rally in and around FCI godown at Sangaiprou today.
Prior to the rally, a meeting was also organized by the Association wherein Sotinkumar Laishram, general secretary of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Manipur Unit was present.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Sotinkumar said that a talk will be held between the Association; Deputy Commissioner, Labor Department and Trade Union & Co-ordination Body of FCI on July 18 to bring about an amicable solution.
He stated that laborers of CAF & PD have been deprived of their basic rights for the last 40 years and lamented that laborers of the department are getting lower wages as compared to other workers in various government departments.
To pay only Rs 0.75 paise to a labor for unloading a rice bag from vehicle and transporting it up to the godown is against the rights of laborers.
In other States, a laborer gets Rs 7-8 for the same work, he pointed out.
He also said that the Central Trade Union of Congress, BJP and CPI; Trade Union and Co-ordinating Committee of Trade Union, Manipur are endorsing the strike.
After the end of the rally, laborers of the Association sealed the godown.
They are also set to prohibit entry of FCI trucks inside the godown for loading as well as unloading rice if the government fails to address their demands at the earliest.
