Imphal, May 15 2022:
Manipur Drivers' Association (MDA) has held Bhartia Infra Project Limited (BIPL) responsible for the road mishap in which two trucks fell into Likhuri River between Makhan village and Chakumai village along NH 2 in the last three days leading to death of two drivers and one handyman while another handyman is still missing.
A team of MDA led by its secretary Ksh Sanjay along with members of Senapati District Truck Drivers' Union visited the site on Sunday to take stock of the situation there.
Interacting with the media, Sanjay said that there was also an accident at the exact same spot involving a tourist bus.
in which 10 occupants of the bus were killed after the bus fell into the river.
They have been requesting the state government and BIPL to take up necessary measures to prevent unwanted incidents considering the condition of Likhuri Bridge.
However, the government was more interested in the election and ignored their request, he said, while demanding immediate necessary steps to address the issue.
Khridziiphi village authority chairman Francis Saleo recounted that they asked the BRO engineer to construct a wider and firmer bridge but BRO did not accept their proposal, consequently leading to frequent road accidents.
He appealed to the authority concerned to install roadside barricades to prevent similar incidents until the bridge is reconstructed to suit the terrain and traffic volume.
Mao MLA Losii Dikho also visited the site and assured of bringing up the issue with the government.
He also said that a review meeting will be held to discuss the cause and solutions for the frequent accidents at the spot.
