Imphal, September 11 2022:
While terming the Friday evening's vandalism and resultant chaos caused by some self-styled volunteers of the union at AMSU headquarters as unfortunate, All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) president Haobijam Chalamba has said that annual general assembly of the union scheduled on September 15 has been postponed until further notice in view of Friday's incident.
The AMSU president also appealed to people not to believe rumours being spread to break apart the union and anyone desperate to get in sight into the Friday incident could meet functionaries of the union and get the factual accounts.
Addressing media persons on Sunday at THAU office, Haobijam Chalamba said that a police complaint with names of all those involved in triggering the chaos at AMSU head quarters has been lodged and the union is ready for fight the issue at law court, if needed.
According to Chalamba, all those who spearheaded the vandalism and created chaos at AMSU headquarters were either expelled for their misdeeds or resigned for their inability to honour union's constitution.
He said that constitution of an ad-hoc committee of the union was unreasonable as it is mandatory to issue a notice before one month of convening general assembly and the same is clearly mentioned in Article viii (c) of AMSU's constitution and the meeting should be chaired by the president.
It was against union's constitution to convene a general body meet by those already expelled from the union, he said, adding that it was handiwork of those trying to break apart AMSU.
Chalamba further said that Manipur University's Human Resource Development Committee advisor Laishram Robindro, who took active role in the Friday evening's vandalism and chaos, is a person involved in misuse of money for coaching and submitted resignation letter when called for resolving fund misuse issue.
Apart from this, Laishram Robindro had worked against AMSU and even produced candidate against AMSU in election, he said, adding that Robindro is no more related with AMSU.
Regarding Bipinchandra Ahanthem, the AMSU president said that Bipinchandra was actively involved in election campaign of NPP candidate in Patsoi AC and unrelated with the union anymore.
Chalamba also said that Chaorel and Dickson, both involved in the Friday's incident, are also members of youth wing of a political party and they are no more related with AMSU.
He further said that Bruce Pebam, who too was involved in the incident, is currently general secretary of a CSO and he had long been unrelated with AMSU.
Regarding selfstyled AMSU advisor Manjit Sarangthem, Chalamba said that Manjit returned to North East from outside and duped many students in the name of providing scholarship and accordingly expelled from the union.
Regarding Laishram Peter, Chalamba said that Peter was election committee chairman (2021-23) and he had handed the president's charge to him (Haobijam Chalamba).
While terming as baseless the allegation levelled against AMSU president, vice president and general secretary, Haobijam Chalamba said that he is currently a student and doing research work after getting JRF scholarship and yet to hold any government post.
There is no provision in the AMSU constitution which bars government employee from holding post in the union including president, he asserted.
Though informed to protect AMSU office from attackers, police acted contradictory and searched AMSU functionaries sitting inside the office and checked every room, Chalamba said, adding that contradictory action of police was very unfortunate.
He then urged government to take immediate action to allow incumbent AMSU functionaries to work from office.
